Bidding on city construction projects should be open to all

The municipal election campaign is a great time to remind those running for Toronto council about why they should support a competitive construction market.

Toronto is the only municipality in Ontario to restrict bidding on city projects to a select group of contractors and labour groups. This makes public construction work at least eight to 15 per cent more expensive, and automatically disqualifies many experienced contractors.

Supporting a competitive construction market should be a no-brainer for Toronto council candidates who recognize that their first priority should be advancing the interests of all Torontonians, not just a select few.
